MAGNOLIA OFFICINALIS BARK EXTRACT
Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract is derived from the bark of the Magnolia officinalis tree, native to East Asia, and has been esteemed in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries. In contemporary skincare, it is recognized for its potent bioactive compounds – particularly magnolol and honokiol – which offer a wide range of dermatological benefits.
To begin with, Magnolia officinalis bark extract exhibits powerful antioxidant activity, effectively neutralizing free radicals and protecting skin cells from oxidative stress. This helps prevent premature skin aging and contributes to maintaining a youthful complexion. In the Rancimat test, its antioxidant capacity was found to be comparable to that of mixed tocopherols (vitamin E), which are widely regarded as highly effective antioxidants.
The extract also demonstrates significant anti-inflammatory properties, helping to soothe irritated skin and reduce redness. Studies have shown that magnolol and honokiol inhibit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, thereby reducing skin inflammation and supporting a calm, balanced complexion.
Additionally, Magnolia officinalis bark extract has been shown to increase skin hydration and elasticity. Clinical evaluations indicate that topical application of formulations containing magnolia bark extract can improve moisture retention and skin firmness. In one study, a cream containing 0.5% magnolia extract applied over four weeks led to increased skin hydration, improved elasticity, and reduced transepidermal water loss (TEWL). For reference, the concentration used in LAST formulations is 1.4%.
Last but not least, Magnolia officinalis bark extract exhibits notable antimicrobial, anti-irritant, anti-acne, and anti-cariogenic properties. It has demonstrated activity against multiple pathogens, including Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis – both associated with acne – as well as Streptococcus oralis and Streptococcus mutans, bacteria linked to dental caries. A minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 9.8 µg/mL was determined against these organisms, supporting its classification as a bacteriostatic agent.
The Magnolia officinalis bark extract used in LAST formulations is 100% plant-derived, vegan, and both ECOCERT and COSMOS certified.
