CYANOCOBALAMIN – VITAMIN B12
Cyanocobalamin is a water-soluble form of vitamin B12 (also known as cobalamin), with a distinctive deep pink colour in its purest form. It is primarily produced through bacterial fermentation and is essential for both the hematological and nervous systems, and it has a complex relationship with the skin. Within the body, vitamin B12 is involved in red blood cell production, brain and nerve health and DNA synthesis.
The cutaneous manifestations of cyanocobalamin deficiency include hyperpigmentation (most commonly), changes in hair and nail, as well as oral changes, including glossitis. In the pharmaceutical industry, vitamin B12 has been used for years to help prevent or alleviate dermatological conditions like atopic dermatitis, eczema, and psoriasis, thanks to its ability to counteract skin-irritating factors. It is particularly beneficial for individuals with very dry, itchy, or inflamed skin.
Recent studies have shined a light on vitamin B12’s helpful role in defending skin from external stressors (including UV light) and supporting the skin’s microbiome.
